So about Yin and Dave part 2

i know i promised that yin and dave part 2 would be finished at the end of this month, but it hasn't. i'd say i'm 65 percent done with part 2, with 90 percent of the animation finished and 20 percent of the coloring finished. however, due to work load, i've put the film aside for now. it'll definitely be finished before this year has ended but after working on it nonstop for 5 months, i think i need a break from it first. 

why did it take so long? because i actually went and SCRAPPED the first draft of part 2. i wasn't satisfied with how the animation and story was going. i ended scrapping a good 2 minutes of animation. i'm still beating myself with a stick for that.


still, there's so much i want to show you, even if it isn't finished. also its a lesson on planning better. here are three of my favorite shots. so here they are.

hopefully this will be a decent appetizer for whats to come.

Summer is kinda here

So I figured since summer's here (or officially supposed to be here but isn't since the rain's a pourin) I've decided to post drawings of icecream and the beach. They were actually supposed to be based off Lladro figurines is saw while i was surfing ebay but of course, the prices of the figurines make my eyeballs melt off their eye sockets. why not illustrate my own versions:

A revamp of an old watercolor painting i did back. i'm starting to really like photoshop.

you guys are probably wondering whats happening with yin and dave part 2. well, due to some unexpected.... detours involving work, i've had no time to work on part 2. i also ended up scrapping half the animation since the story and animation wasn't going how i wanted it to be. the good news is that it'll give me more to animate and i have fresh ideas on how to take the direction. the bad news is is that you guys will have to wait.

I don't really use photoshop that often so I'd thought I'd  pick it up and attempt painting with it. I'm quite pleased with the results. Its a refreshing way to color since I constantly use flash all the time.

Yin and Dave part 1 is finally out!

Hey everyone. Yin and Dave part 1 is finally out on the web! Part two will be completed by the end of this year most likely. I finished the film as the plumber was at my house hehe.

I know this film was supposed to be done a month ago. Seeing that I had completed my thesis in a similar style, I greatly underestimated the time needed to complete. It actually takes a lot longer for me to color and composite than to animate. This film is more detailed than my thesis.

The inspiration for the film is not so much based on me, but based on people around me, partically my male non-asian friends who are dating asian women. Some of it is based off of my experience dating a non asian. Mostly tho, this film is really about cultural clash and racial clash. Many times I would bring non asian friends to my house as my parents would look at them kinda funny.

I'm psyched about part two. Now that I know how long it takes for me to color, I can better prepare.

Yin and Dave

Yin and Dave is a new film that is coming out over this year. It'll be released in small increments over the year and hopefully be completed by early 2013. 
I know I said that the first two minutes will be released today, but due to side work, I wasn't able to. The film is coming along though and coming along great. Here are some screenshots of some finished scenes.
When the film is finished, I will upload it to Youtube and you will see it.

Happy Valentine's Day guys. Here are some new illustrations to celebrate!

the bunny on the moon

Alma Shepard-Matsuo is having an event called Art Is Hope, that is taking place at the Japanese American United Church at Friday October 15. I am going to be selling prints there and half of the profit will go to charity to aid the people who were devastated by the natural disasters in Japan. Do try to participate if you can, its only 20 dollars a table. I decided to do a couple of drawings that were Japanese themed. Here's three of them. Definitely more to come.



So there's this story in Asian folklore that a rabbit lives on the moon. In fact, there's actually a pattern of a rabbit on the moon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rabbit_in_the_moon_standing_by_pot.png In the Chinese version, the rabbit is pounding the elixir of life, but in the Japanese version, its just pounding mochi, hahah. This is the first drawing I've completed ith flash CS5. I like that it has a much more sophisticated color swatch variety and icon organization. Other than that tho, not much has changed from CS4, and unfortunately, it still gitches and crashes unexpectedly.

This second drawing is a tea ceremony bunny. I dunno, I just like the way tea ceremonies look. I've heard they're extremely boring but hey. Plus it just gives an excuse to draw kimonos and Japanese treats.


And this last one I did about 4 months back. A lot of people seem to like this drawing a lot, so its definitely gonna be up.

year of the bunny

hey everyone. i know its been a while since i've posted hear. i've been too busy with thesis to post hear anymore. although i will post every once in a while. the reason why i'm not putting stuff from my thesis up here is because i want it to be a surprise until the dusties come

so i saw shelley's post of the tigers. the chinese year of the tiger is ending and the year of the rabbit is beginning. supposidly, this is an unlucky year because it is the metal tiger. tigers are known for begin unpredictable and wild in the chinese zodiac, so the tiger year, nothing is ever what it seems. being born in the year of the snake, who's concern is stability and routine, this year has been extremely crazy. most crazy is that my best friend's mother died this year. i do look forward to the rabbit year in that supposidly, it is a year of a lot stablity and creativity.

interesting. i'm the only snake in a family of roosters. mom, dad and bro are all roosters. funny thing is that i loved snakes since i was a kid and never understood why my family was afraid of them. i love how snakes looked, how they lived, how they killed. i also knew snakes normally don't attack people unless you bother them. my favorite being kingsnake, a snake docile towards humans, infamous for preying on other snakes. they are also immune to venom and even eat snakes with poison.

so i guess i thought i'd draw some stuff with snakes.



so my best friend said the year of the bunny is a great year for snakes. we were discussing why. then i just came up with this analogy of why the bunny year is good for snakes:


MUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!! I WILL HAVE MAH WAAAY!!!!! I WILL EAT ALL BUNNIESSSSS AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH haha haha haha... eh.... yeah

to sum it up, i didn't like what happened last tiger year... so i'm greatly looking forward to this year. i'm bring my friends to chinatown to party again.

vector experimentation

I thought I'd experiment a little with vector art. Here they are done in Flash Cs4 (the glitchiest program in the world). It was really fun and the results had they're own style. I think I'll stick with it.

my friend's have been drawing ourselves as pokemon trainer to celebrate the coming of pokemon soul silver. It was my childhood favorite so I decided to join. I love fire pokemon. My favorite pokemon of all time is houndoom.

It's been a while since I've uploaded anything. I've been really busy with school. Thesis year is coming and I have to start working on a film. I made a small munny of one of the characters in my film. Here he is.

I never really do get a chance to post scribbles anywhere since it wouldn't seem professional. All this week, I've been on a creative drawing streak and I was drawing things to make people laugh. I thought I would post some on since I really don't have too much time to do anything personal anymore.

Here's the final concept of how I draw myself. I gave her Disney eyes instead of anime eyes and I like it a lot. I'm going to experiment more with this.

Fishing!

The latest and first assignment for the second semester was fishing. We had two weeks to do it and somehow I wound up turning it into a small film rather than a short animation. I like the way it turned out. Here it is!

when I was walking down soho

I saw those people selling artwork on the streets. This picture caught my eye and I bought it for 20 bucks because I'm an idiot.


Just kidding. The reason this picture caught me was that the girl looks almost exactly like I did when I was fifteen. Short black hair, all black attire. Even though I disliked the fact that I was a self-loathing, misanthropic teenager there were some good memories that came along when I was high school. Came up with my first story ideas for comics, made good friends, discovered my all time favorite series, Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning, and for the first time, left my neighborhood in Queens to explore all of Manhattan, shopping, and realizing how great the world actually is.
When I saw this picture, it actually brought back some nostalgia. I also saw other people who passed by and it caught their attention too. So I went and bought it. The artist's name is Ron Wiggins.

and now for something, completely different

WERECATS!
I had the most awesome dream couple of days back. It even spawned a story idea I'm gonna name "Jeremiah's Tome." More on that later. I dreamt that there was this dude in robes going around chanting out a book in some unknown language, but if you understood what he said, you'd turn into a monster! I heard the word "cat" and I turned into a werecat and started rampaging. I decided to draw it out.

The marker was too deep, so it looks like a dark stain instead of blood. I thought it still looked cool though. I don't draw anthromorphic stuff often at all, so I gave it my best shot.
